This guide walks you through the hardware wallet start process: unboxing, device initialization, setting a PIN, backing up your recovery seed, verifying firmware, and connecting to software safely.
Unbox and Inspect
Unpack your hardware wallet and inspect the tamper-evident seal. Keep the packaging and the included recovery card. Verify the device model and serial number match the sticker on the box; this helps ensure authenticity before setup.
Initialize the Device
Power on the device and follow on-screen prompts to start initialization. Choose "Create new wallet" to generate a new seed or "Recover wallet" if restoring. Initialization generates a cryptographic seed phrase that controls access to funds — never share it.
Set a Strong PIN
Set a PIN code on the device. Pick a number that’s easy for you to remember but hard for others to guess. A PIN protects the device if it’s lost or stolen; combine PIN protection with secure storage of your recovery phrase.
Backup Your Recovery Seed
Write down the seed (recovery phrase) on the supplied card. Do not save it digitally. Store backups in multiple secure, separated locations (e.g., safe, deposit box). Recovery seed backup is your last resort to restore access to funds.
Verify Firmware & Software
Always update to the latest official firmware using the official desktop or web app. Verify firmware signatures when prompted, and use the official YourWallet app or recommended open-source wallets. Avoid third-party downloads that cannot be verified.
Connect, Test & Send Small
Connect to the official desktop or browser wallet. Test receiving by sending a small amount first, then verify the transaction on the device screen. This ensures your setup is correct before moving larger balances.
Maintain Security Best Practices
Never share your seed phrase, private keys, or PIN. Beware phishing sites — always confirm site URLs and use bookmarks. Keep firmware up to date and restore only from your own seed backups if needed.
